What activities were you involved in while you were a student at Denison?
I was a dedicated member of the Black Student Union, La Fuerza Latina, Tehillah, Gospel Choir, Sister Leaders in Dialogue, Denison Service Organization, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. I eventually served presidential terms within BSU and Tehillah and was a Community Senator for DCGA. Needless to say, I was a busy bumblebee.
Since graduation, how have you stayed connected with Denison?
I have been part of Denison’s Black Alumni Association since graduation and am currently on the executive board as the parliamentarian. I also mentor a couple of students who enrolled from my hometown of Chicago, one of whom graduated just last year. Between visiting campus for BAA events, I would visit my mentees at various times during the school year to offer in-person support and guidance.
What has been most rewarding about your volunteer experience?
Honestly, the greatest reward is seeing the impact of my involvement on current students. I love being able to foster a meaningful, cross-generational community with them. I’m also energized by their innovative ideas and ways of navigating the world.
What would you tell an alum who is considering volunteering for Denison?
It’s worth the investment of time and energy. Denison undoubtedly imparted tools, experiences, and connections that helped shape us into the amazing people we are today. How wonderful it is to participate in giving those things to our future leaders.
What is your favorite Denison memory?
Gosh, there are so many to choose from. One of my favorites is a Denison Service Organization project where a group of us cleaned the Licking River in kayaks. I had never kayaked before and, luckily, landed a partner who was on the rowing team. On top of the joy of positively impacting the environment, I will never forget basking in the beauty of nature as we glided through the waters. It felt like I was in a movie scene. I’ll savor that feeling forever.
